Researchers open secret cave under Mexican pyramid
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Archeologists are opening a cave sealed for more than 30 years deep beneath a Mexican pyramid to look for clues about the mysterious collapse of one of ancient civilization's largest cities.

I've visited Teotihuacan to see the Temple of the Sun and the Temple of the Moon. It's a long climb to the top but the view is worth it. It's a strange, alien place even to the people who live around there. The wide stone avenues are crowded with memories.

Remember, whisper the creeping weeds, empires fall.

Whee!

I want to write an article about Exodus 32-34 today. In case you are not up on your Old Testament, that is the story of the Golden Calf. I started working on it yesterday, but I can't really read it because I don't see well enough, and I can't do it from memory. I have to use my Jewish Study Bible, and since this is not online, I have to read the actual book. (The reason I have to use this source is the footnotes and the commentary). I wonder if I can get my partner to read it for me? She HATES reading the Bible. If something pops up, you'll know that I got her to do it.

Hate Speech and the American Dream

Ever since the police chase on July 1st, I have noticed a sharp increase in the amount of hate speech coming my way. It started right after the crash. One of my neighbors (not the one directly next door... another one). Went to the corner to try to see what happened. At that point, I was still in front of my house, not wanting to venture too near right away lest there be guns.

After a view minutes, the excited neighbor returned. "It was an animal!" I looked at him, aghast. What kind of "animal", I thought. Was there a dog involved? Cat? Deer? Possum? Raccoon? Skunk? Was there a monkey loose in the car? WTF?

"What?" I said.

"An animal!" he said, again. "You know... a black guy!"

How does one respond to this? I got terribly, terribly angry and walked away. The neighbor didn't seem to notice. He gleefully took his news elsewhere. I found that I couldn't leave it alone, though. When I went to the corner to take the picture, I entered into the middle of the biggest group of African Americans that I could find... that group of teenagers that I mentioned, and started up a lively and loud conversation about what happened and what we all saw. A lot of why I did that was in response to that racist neighbor, a kind of a "Oh yeah!?!? Well, I'll show you! I'll go hang with the black folks!" But, they were fun kids, and I am glad I did it. I really get a kick out of teenagers.

Nicola Griffith has written a splendid essay on "Identity and SF" that relates her personal discovery of the genre, how and why it works, and the ways it can change our perspective on the world. It's a must-read piece.

Also worth exploring is Nicola's own science fiction. I'm especially intrigued by her earlier novel Ammonite.

I am witch, not wiccan

I am witch, not wiccan.
I am respecting your choosen path but will always follow my own - which makes me solitary.
I am probably gypsy - its why I connect to the places and energy routes, not countries.
I am child of nature - I feel the best when I am outside in the forest or in the garden.
I am sharing my path with many pets - I feel its the best of showing I CARE.
I am sure magic and spirituality is not for "choosen ones" - so I laugh at the "masters" and "gurus" and "only ones" because magic is shared with all who seek it.
I know that magic is many times so funny - so I laugh at the serious faces of those who dont want to hear the joke of it.
I am witch - I know, I will, I dare and I will keep silent because it is the way it is for me.

..........................................................

And........... for all the real "cat magic" lovers :) - the REAL pentacle LOL

Well, I survived the Fourth of July with my family. No one in fact was damaged, although it was a narrow thing at some points. I mean, there are normally flying barbs of wit, but we're all used to that. And then there's Sibling #7's son, who jumped over a "fountain" firework on his skateboard. His mother says, "What are you going to do if something shoots out of there and goes up your butt? I ain't taking you to the doctor to explain that." Then a couple of the really big fireworks that shoot multiple Large Pretty Explodey Things went sideways. Naturally, some of them came towards us, and we scattered. [info]thewonderboy was hit on the elbow by a bit of flying something, but was unscathed.

After we determined that no one was actually hurt, Sibling #5, who was sitting up on Sib #7's screened-in second-floor porch, said, "That was pretty funny from up here." I heart my siblings.

~
Addendum: Sibling #7 is now giving my son a sack full of "leftover" sparklers, bottle rockets, and assorted other items. "THAT'S JUST WHAT I NEED, THANKS" I said to my sister as they went by.

"That's what aunts are for," she said.

She has children too. "I'll remember that."

The Morrigan

David sees spirits and has been starting to see some of my guides and the house guradians around the house now that he has overcome the fear.

Recently he spotted something that sounded very much to me like Morrigan.

I have been hearing a lot of things lately with sound auras with the migraines, so it is frustrating to know the diffence between what are my guides/visions and what are migraines, so I think they have been coming to hims sometimes, or being more assertive.

I have been hearing Ravens lately. I thought this was an aura, so the Raven Statue, the metal one, fell in front of me the other day. This one I could not mistake. IT is not a light statue and could not easily topple over!. Then, the other night, David spotted a Dark haired woman who was clearly not human but was way to big to be what he thought was a fairy.

We ended up getting into a discussion about sidhe, etc and we really got lost for a while about who/what the visitor was. He only saw her so breifly, peeking around from the bedroom where I do my night work from. He did not see the full body, etc. David is still learning SO MUCH.

The next morning I was wondering what it could have been I saw and I started hearing Ravens or crows again. While it may have not been Morrigan herself, it may have been the spirit of a raven or crow, one of my guardian and totems. I see both Raven and Crows around my house.

I have been worried about my brother who seems so depressed today. I fear the message is a warning about my brothers path, but it is his path to choose and I must not interfere. The Raven choose the dead, for they are wise and they know when it is their time.

When I started this path, I always thought I would end up with Freya as my patron deity, I think partly because of my dear little familiar Spike. I misss him so, and look to have another familiar some day. For now, with 4 dog and 2 other cats, it will be years before I can have a familiar who can live in the house.

He are links/info to Raven

The Raven has been dreaded as a bird of ill fortune; distruction and darkness; but in the spiritual world he is a bird who brings protection. He warns the forces of light of oncoming destruction and battle therefor giving us the power to guard and time for preparation. These destructive forces are a natural and necessary facet of life even though they are painful; but the raven's relationship to the forces of destruction does not mean he is the bringer of the destructive forces yet better considered the messenger.

The Raven is a bird of protection by warning the forces of light of upcoming destruction or battles; so they may prepare themselves. His association with destruction does not make him the bringer of it; but better yet the messenger. By heeding his warnings one is able to possibly change the impact of a situation even though they may not be able to change the inevitable. Like the Druids you can learn to read of the type of warning or message the Raven is sending you by learning to understand his flight behavior and even the sounds he makes. With The Raven as my totem I can tell if it is a betrayal; a death; a legal complication; or struggle with emotional issues by simply watching him when he comes to me. The Crow is also considered to be similar to the Raven in his qualities and energies.

The Raven brings powerful healing qualities by a process known as the resolutions of opposites. This meaning in darkness there is light; and in light there is darkness- death is necessary for rebirth- destruction is necessary for renewal. There must be death in order to make room for birth. By using this process of resolution of opposites we learn to resolve conflicts that have long lain buried in our unconscience or our past. There must be darkness if we are to emerge into the light. By his association with death he is also associated with depth.

The Raven is a bird of the Underworld; he has the ability to see into the past, the future, and beyond the veil of death. He has the great ability to travel from this world to the next; accessing the darkest regions bringing back visions and oracle instructions for the seeker and the healer. It is believed that the Raven is given as a gift from the Gods for the Seeker and the Healer. This totem guide was one of my biggest battles to accept as I was taken to these dark regions and saw many things in the Underworld that I did not care to see. I fought the Raven's knowledge in the beginning and this created a great fear for me; I prayed not to travel with him as I did not want to know of the destruction and death. I finally accepted the Raven and his gift and have learned to accept all knowledge good or bad. We must not be afraid of the darkness if we are to gain knowledge; take the plunge with the Raven into the dark depths and know that in doing so you are protected.

If you have embraced, accepted, and know Raven; you find affinites with his qualities and energies; an introduction to the Raven at a phase in your life may be an indication that he is urging you to hear his message; To accept destruction or death in your life as an opportunity for renewal or rebirth. Sometimes our lives may go through difficult dark times in order for better and brighter things to come. Our fear of the darkness is worse than anything we may find there.

Calvin escaped her cage today. Thank goodness I noticed in time and closed all the windows!

I chased her all around the lounge and all around the kitchen, and finally into the entryway of the flat. I closed the door behind me so that there was nowhere to go. She flew in frenzied circles and finally bonked into the door and skittered to the floor. I threw my cloak over her and carried her back to the cage that way, so there was no chance of another escape.

It was quite frustrating. All I'd wanted was to peacefully eat my toast, and there I was manhandling a stubborn budgie!

Julian comes home today!

Today sometime after noon, Julian should be discharged from the hospital! He is breast feeding a bit better, and taking lots of breast milk from a bottle. I think we can wean him off it though, once we are home. He is cute as a button! As soon as the cell phone data cable arrives, we will have pictures! Vincent was allowed to hold him for 10 minutes yesterday, and is tickled to be a big brother. We took him to see Wall-E yesterday, a terrific movie!

Update: The NICU wants to keep him for 48 more hours because his vitals have dropped suddenly twice.... so he's not coming home today. We might have to bring him home on a monitor.....we are rather concerned and disappointed, but better to have him at the hospital where he will be well cared for.

Disappointed in America

I went to see the fireworks. They were mediocre. The music was all jingo-bango praise of American ... fantasies, really, about what the country is said to be but really isn't anymore. It was depressing. And when we left, the whole place was littered with trash. The whooping pseudo-patriots couldn't even be bothered to pick up their cups and plates off the land they professed to love.

And I came home to these pathetic pieces of news:

Joseph L. Galloway | How Dare They Rip the Fourth Amendment?
Joseph L. Galloway, of McClatchy Newspapers: "How can even one senator on either side of the aisle in good conscience vote in favor of this law that does nothing to enhance our security and everything to diminish our rights as a free people? How can both men who seek to become our next president cast such a vote when both should be standing shoulder-to-shoulder declaring that they would govern by our consent and with our approval, not by wielding the coercive and corrosive and corrupt powers that King George III and his latter-day namesake from Texas thought are theirs by divine right?"

Judge Orders Google to Turn Over YouTube Records
Miguel Helft, of The New York Times: "A federal judge in New York has ordered Google to turn over to Viacom a database linking users of YouTube, the Web's largest video site by far, with every clip they have watched there. The order raised concerns among users and privacy advocates that the online video viewing habits of tens of millions of people could be exposed. But Google and Viacom said they were hoping to come up with a way to protect the anonymity of YouTube viewers." thought are theirs by divine right?"

While there is not much more to be done about the debacle in Washington, D.C. beyond screaming at indifferent politicians there is certainly something that can be done to protest the rifling of YouTube records: stop watching.

I miss the America that didn't involve constantly looking over your shoulder to see who's spying on you. That used to be for places like Russia and East Germany, places that America mocked for doing such wicked things.

So You Would Listen to Me
by Laura Riesco

So you would listen to me
I tangled your silence

My words became
shrill with the wind

The starry shadows
of all my poems
plunged in your eyes

So you would listen to me
God put you in the night

The whole world put
solitude in our steps

So you would listen to me
I diverted your path

How many nights spent
I gave you in a minute

You were to blame
for the tremor of my hands

You were to blame
and now you listened to me

Illuminated knives
crossed my breasts

I dug from the cavity
the reason of my dreams

So you would listen to me
I tangled your silence

I was falling in parts
and in parts in silence
I was leaving the soul to you.
